I was incredibly blessed at birth, receiving a goddess gift of extreme value . . . I was born to a line of strong, generous and compassionate women. Did you know that the original Mother's Day was not an event celebrating our birth mothers? (And that its founder later said she regretted starting the holiday since it had become so commercial.) The first Mothers Day was actually a Mother's March to stamp out hunger and poverty in the children of Appalachia. Check out this article about the history of Mother's Day. The 'mother goddess' that I choose to honor this time of year is the Goddess Nut, known as the 'Mother of All Gods (and Goddesses). You can read the retelling of her most ancient myths at Goddess Nut.
Whether or not we’re fortunate to be bound to "our Mothers" by blood ties, this year let's give thanks for all those women who have been the spiritual mothers in our lives and celebrate the holiday in the style that it was originally intended. Here are a few of my favorite quotes by and about mothers for you to enjoy:
In closing, a reminder to ... Enjoy this Mother's Day, celebrating the unique gifts
